Lady Anne Clifford statue unveiled
A statue of one of the area's most famous historical figures has been unveiled in Kirkby Stephen.
Lady Anne Clifford has been sculpted by Winton-based artist Diane Lawrenson and the statue, called Lady Anne's Way, stands proudly in front of the town's visitor centre.
Lady Anne Clifford was a pioneering woman of great determination and energy and a played a major part in shaping Appleby in the 17th century. Her programme of restoration, included a series of castles from Skipton to Brougham, near Penrith. It was Appleby Castle, which became her favourite home. As well as restoring the castle she gave generously to the refurbishment of the town's churches and her memorial stands beside that of her mother in St Lawrence's Church, Appleby.
