Thursday 4th July, Dawdles Walk Smardale to Waitby Greenriggs
Smardale car park to Waitby Greenriggs along the disused railway, we might even see some orchids.  Back to Kirkby Stephen for optional refreshments.  Meet at The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30 for car share 4.6 miles.

 

Friday 5th July, Legstretcher Walk Potts Valley
Walk 4.8m/7.8km ascent 541ft/165m.  Meet at Christian Head car park, Kirkby Stephen 09:30 for car share 5.5 miles

 

Thursday 11th July, Dawdles Walk Swingy Bridge circular
We will leave the town via Frank’s Bridge following the River Eden until we pick up the medieval Hartley Lane through Podgill woods.  Bollam Lane from the crossroads and over Swingy Bridge back to Nateby Road.  We will pass two Poetry Path stones.  Optional refreshments back in town.  Meet at The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am.

  

Thursday 18th July, Dawdles Walk Cautley Spout
A gentle walk to the bottom of the Cautley Spout waterfall. Optional refreshments to be found.  Meet at The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am for car share 9 miles.

 

Thursday 25th July, Dawdles Walk Greenriggs circular
Heading our west of the town.  Bloody Bones Lane, Tarn Lane and Greenriggs returning via Croglam Lane.  Optional refreshments in town.  Meet at The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am.

 

Saturday 27th July, Westmorland Dales Festival Lady Anne’s Way section
Transport to The Thrang to pick up the Lady Anne’s Way roughly following the infant River Eden to Pendragon Castle.  A stop to explore the castle before a road walk to Outhgill to see Faraday Cottage, the home of Michael Faraday’s parents, Andy Goldsworthy’s Pinfold, The Jew Stone, Settle-Carlisle Memorial and St Mary’s church for a short talk about Lady Anne Clifford’s work at this pretty little church. Bring a drink and snack.  Booking essential as places are limited waw@uppereden.org.uk Meet The Market Square, Kirkby Stephen 9:15am for free transport 5.7 miles.

 

Saturday 27th July, Westmorland Dales Festival Wharton circular walk
After enjoying the activities at Jubilee Park, join us on a circular walk via Wharton Hall. We will join the permissive path to the River Eden at upper Stenkrith to see the cascades and pools as the River Eden rushes through and under the road bridge.  We cross the road and go over the Millennium Bridge joining a short section of the NVT disused Stainmore railway where we can see three Poetry Path stones.  We join the medieval Hartley Lane through Nateby into the Nateby and Wharton deer parks and over the bridge.  You will see Wharton Hall from a distance and the famous Wharton Oak, returning to Jubilee Park on the concrete road.  The Engine Shed will be open for refreshments.  Meet Jubilee Park car park, Kirkby Stephen 3pm.

 

Sunday 28th July, Westmorland Dales Festival - the History of Kirkby Stephen through its Buildings
This a very short walk with lots of standing to examine the buildings in Church Walk, Union Square, The Green and Market Street north to learn about the hidden past that these buildings reveal. Free handout. Places are limited so booking is essential waw@uppereden.org.uk Meet at the Walkers are Welcome/NVT gazebo in the churchyard 3pm.

 

Thursday 1st August, Dawdles Walk Smardale Nature Reserve Butterfly Count
Every year we visit the Smardale Nature Reserve to count some of the beautiful and some rare butterflies. Optional refreshments back in Kirkby Stephen.  Meet The Cloisters for car share Smardale 4.6 miles.

 

Friday 2nd August, Legstretcher Walk, Sedbergh circular
Winder from Sedbergh 5 miles, 8 km; 1200ft, 400m ascent.  Meet at the Christian Head car park, Kirkby Stephen 9:30am for car share 14 miles.

 

Thursday 8th August, Dawdles Walk Owen’s Farm Shop
We will pick up Middlesike and Greensike medieval green lanes towards Waitby.  Over Sandwath Bridge to Owen’s Farm for optional refreshments.  Returning via Stobars and Bloody Bones Lanes back to town.  Meet The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am.


Thursday 15th August, 
Dawdles Walk Tailbrigg
A walk around the moorland on top of Tailbrigg with spectacular views over the Eden Valley, Mallerstang and Nine Standards.  Returning to the Black Bull, Nateby for optional refreshments.  Meet The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am for car share 2.3 miles.

 

Thursday 22nd August, Dawdles Walk Lakes Field
Optional car share to Hartley to the beginning of this walk, 1 mile.  This is one of the latest John Strutt Foundation Charity projects, an enclosed walk within part of their reserve and lakes.  Returning to Kirkby Stephen for refreshments.  Meet at The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am.

 

Thursday 29th August, Dawdles Walk with Ester and John
Ester Sloggett and her husband John Murrey will lead us on a new walk. All will be revealed.  Meet at The Cloisters for car share.

 

Dawdles walks take around an hour unless otherwise stated, 2/3 miles.  We will go whatever the weather - please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the day – we will adapt walks when essential.

Legstretcher walks, allow for a morning out -1st Friday once a month. - Next Legstretcher Walk Friday 6th September.  

Where there is a car share, allow for extra time to reach destinations and return. We usually find optional refreshments after our walks.

Everyone welcome, suggested donation £1 per walk towards expenses.  

We will substitute the walk leader if not available, back marker added on the day as needed.  We carry Public Liability Insurance.
