Thursday 1st May - Dawdles Walk plus car share 6 miles - Newbiggin new walk
Hazel Pratt will lead us on a new walk at Newbiggin-on-Lune. Meet at The Cloisters 10:30am.
Friday 2nd May - Legstretcher Walk plus car share - Fox Tower and Mount Ida, Brough
From Helbeck quarry we will walk across open access land to the permissive path to the folly that is the Fox Tower built by John Metcalf Carleton c1775 with spectacular views over the Eden Valley. Finishing the walk by going up to Mount Ida. 4 Miles/6.5km, 2.5 hrs. No dogs are allowed. Meet at Christian Head car park 9:30am.
Thursday 8th May - Dawdles Walk - Greenrggs circular
Out to the west of the town for this walk along old lanes and fields to Greenriggs Farm returning to the town via Croglam Lane on the Coast2Coast route. Meet at The Cloisters 10:30am.
Thursday 15th May - Dawdles Walk with car share 9 miles - Cautley Spout*
A short walk in the Howgill Fells from Cross Keys Temperance Inn to England’s highest waterfall and return. There is a new all-access bridge over the River Rawthey and we will pass the site of a 2,000 year old Iron Age settlement. Meet at The Cloisters 10:30am.
Thursday 22nd May - Dawdles Walk - Lakes Field Walk, Hartley*
A short walk to Hartley for this newly developed walk in the John Strutt Foundation Nature Reserve walking round their lakes and experiencing the wildlife including waterfoul and deer. Meet at The Cloisters 10:30am. Optional refreshments back in Kirkby Stephen.
Thursday 29th May - Dawdles Walk - Tailbrigg and Black Bull Inn, Nateby
We will drive through Nateby and up the Swaledale road to Tailbrigg, a 547m summit and rough moorland which is easily assessable from the roadside parking. An opportunity to hear Curlew, Oyster Catchers, Lap Wings and Skylarks. Return to the Black Bull Nateby for refreshments. Meet at The Cloisters 10:30am for car share 2.3 miles.
Thursday 5th June - Dawdles Walk - Swingy Bridge and Bollam Lane
We will cross Frank’s Bridge and wander the medieval lanes returning to the town via Swingy Bridge and Bollom Lane. Optional refreshments in Kirkby Stephen on return. Meet at The Cloisters 10:30am.
Friday 6th June - Legstretcher Walk - Stennerskeugh Clouds
3.7 miles/6km 575ft/175m ascent 2 hrs. The Clouds is a rocky outcrop on the flank of Wild Boar Fell, with limestone crags and pavements with fantastic views across the Eden Valley to the Pennines and the Lake District fells. Meet at Christian Head car park for car share 5.8 miles.
Thursday 12th June - Dawdles Walk - Augill Pasture and Brough Ice Cream Parlour
It’s wild orchid spotting time of the year. Augill Pasture is a Cumbrian Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve high above the A66 as it rises up Stainmore with specular views over the upper Eden valley. We will take the opportunity of coming back through Brough to stop at the Brough Castle Ice Cream Parlour. Meet at The Cloisters for car share 5.4 miles.
Thursday 19th June - Dawdles Walk - Jubilee Park and Wharton Hall
From Jubilee Park car park we will do a circular walk to Wharton Hall which takes in the cascades at Stenkrith and the Nateby and Wharton lynchets. We will stop at Jubilee Park to see the meadow orchids. Meet at the Cloisters for car share 1 mile. Please bring a picnic for a change.
Thursday 26th June - Dawdles Walk - Waitby Greenriggs and Owen’s Farm
Possibly the best wild orchid examples in our area are at Waitby Greenriggs, a Cumbria Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve. We will stop on the return at Owen’s Farm for refreshments. Meet at The Cloisters for car share 2.4 miles.
Dawdles walks should take about an hour unless otherwise stated - Where there is a car share, allow for extra time to reach destinations and return. We usually find optional refreshments.
Legstretchers, allow for a morning out - First Friday once a month - Please wear suitable footwear for wet and uneven surfaces and clothes appropriate to the Cumbria weather. A drink and snack is useful as we don’t always end near a café or pub for refreshments.
Everyone welcome, suggested donation £1 per walk towards expenses.
We will substitute the walk leader if not available, back marker added on the day as needed. We carry Public Liability Insurance. * These walks may be adaptable for wheelchairs and small powered mobility scooters at their own risk, please contact us.
