Thursday 5th September - Dawdles Walk Augill Pasture Nature Reserve, Brough
Meet The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30 for car share 5.4 miles. This less well-known Cumbria Willdlife Trust nature reserve lies next to the A66 on Stainmore. It was originally a 19th century industrial landscape with the ruins of a lead smelt mill dating from 1843. There is a woodland and mountain pasture haymeadow to discover and we will be looking for Devil’s Bit Scabious. Some climbing steps and two stiles but only a short walk. Option refreshments back in Kirkby Stephen.
Friday 6th September - Legstretcher Walk Fox Tower and Mount Ida
Meet Christian Head car park 9:30am, for car share 4.5 miles. Walk from Hartley Quarry car park to the Fox Tower above Brough across open access land and a permissive path which is well worth the walk for fantastic views. The walk will continue to Mount Ida, another view point. No dogs are allowed on the permissive path. 4 Miles/6.5km, 2.5 hrs.
Sunday 8th September - Celebrating Historical Routes for Heritage Open Days
Kirkby Stephen’s past roads – 4 miles easy. Meet Upper Eden Visitor Centre 10:30am. An easy walk highlighting much of our local historical routes. Coffin bridge, Hartley Castle, medieval lanes, deer parks, Wharton Hall, drover’s road, turnpike and toll houses. Booking: waw@uppereden.org.uk
Monday 9th September - Celebrating Historical Routes for Heritage Open Days
Belah Viaduct and Packhorse roads. Meet at Mouthlock Chapel, Barras.Visiting the remains of Sir Thomas Bouch’s Belah Viaduct and the lost hamlet of High Ewbank, once the junction of packhorse road. 4 miles 200m ascent, moderate, 2 hours. Thursday 12th September - Celebrating Historical Routes for Heritage Open Days
Roman Road to turnpike at Street, Ravenstondale. Meet The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30 for car share 5.1 miles or The Fat Lamb, Crossbank, Ravenstonedale 10:45am. A short walk around Cote Moor exploring the Roman Road and encampment together with other local history. Refreshments are available after the walk at the Fat Lamb where there is an impressive collection of automobilia and retro collectables on display in the museum bar. Booking: waw@uppereden.org.uk
Thursday 19th September - Dawdles Walk Middlesike/Greensike Lanes and Owen’s Farm
Meet The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am. Exploring the medieval grass lanes on the outskirts of the town with a refreshment stop half-way at Owen’s Farm.
Thursday 26th September - Dawdles Walk Hartley circular and Kirkby Hill
Meet The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am. One of our favourite walks to the pretty village of Hartley, returning to a short optional climb up Kirkby Hill. Refreshments in Kirkby Stephen.
Thursday 3rd October - Dawdles Walk Brough circular
Meet at the Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am for car share 4.1 miles. Circular walk of Church and Market Brough exploring some of the lesser-known back alleys. Optional refreshments at Brough Ice Cream Parlour and free visit to the castle.
Friday 4th October - Legstretcher Walk Stenneskeugh and Fell End Clouds
Meet Christian Head Car Park 09:30 for car share 5.8 miles.Walk from the Old Quarry, Fell En. The clouds are the local name for these spectacular limestone pavements. 3.7 miles/6km 575ft/175m ascent, 2 hours.
Thursday 10th October - Dawdles Walk Hartley Lane and Swingy Bridge
Meet The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am. By now we should be seeing some autumn colour in these medieval lanes. Optional refreshments back in Kirkby Stephen.
Thursday 17th October - Dawdles Walk Jubilee Park with presentation
Meet The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am. Hoping to see this Victorian park in autumn splendour but it hides many wildflower surprises. Anne Taylor will tell us about some of the recent discoveries and the Trusts recent work and future plans. Optional refreshments back in town.
Thursday 24th October - Dawdles Walk Tailbrigg and Black Bull, Nateby
Meet The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am for car share 2.3 miles. We will park on the Keld Road next to this 547m limestone escarpment, Tailbrigg on Nateby Common. A short walk takes us to the cairn, believed to be a burial cairn, before we cut across the moorland to the returning shooters path. This is a special place, feeling on top of the world with spectacular views of the Eden valley below. Optional refreshments at the Black Bull, Nateby.
Thursday 31st October - Dawdles Walk Horrible Histories - Halloween town special
Meet at the Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am.Dare you go out on Halloween? What will we discover? Beheaded knights, Jangling ghosts, Loki, Taggy man, murder and the Whitby influence. Bring the garlic.
Dawdles walks take around an hour unless otherwise stated, 2/3 miles. We will go whatever the weather - please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the day – we will adapt walks when essential.
Legstretcher walks, allow for a morning out -1st Friday once a month. Where there is a car share, allow for extra time to reach destinations and return. We usually find optional refreshments after our walks.
Everyone welcome, suggested donation £1 per walk towards expenses.
We will substitute the walk leader if not available, back marker added on the day as needed. We carry Public Liability Insurance.
